Pregnancy Calendars home :: What Is Prenatal Screening

What is prenatal screening?

After all the excitement has settled, it is time to pay attention to some things that will be of growing concern in the months to come.  Like many expectant mothers, you may be worried about your baby’s health throughout the pregnancy.  There are now options for mothers-to-be to find out if there are any early problems concerning their babies with the help of prenatal screening.  Thanks to the advancement of medical science, there are now various types of prenatal screening which can aid in the detection of birth defects in the unborn child.

Blood tests and ultrasound scans are the more common and less expensive type of prenatal screening.  These are relatively harmless to both you and your baby.  The more expensive and also invasive screening used to detect birth abnormalities include procedures such as amniocentesis.  This is usually recommended to mothers who are 35 years and older.

Prenatal screening checks the health of the developing baby and the tests only suggest certain problems.  Your doctor will recommend and perform further investigation to confirm his suspicions if any at all.  Of course, it is equally important for you to be armed with good knowledge to guide you in your decision when it comes to such screenings.  If you have questions about prenatal screening, it is important that you speak to your doctor about your worries and address them early.
